Ingredients for Creamy Baked Swiss Chicken

Below is an overview of the 5 main ingredients you need to make dump-and-bake Swiss chicken. It doesn’t get much better than this easy dinner recipe! You can find the ingredient measurements and complete directions in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  • Chicken Breasts: we use 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts in this recipe. You can also use chicken thighs.
  • Swiss Cheese: mild and creamy Swiss cheese melts perfectly into the creamy sauce.
  • Cream of Chicken Soup: the base of the sauce.
  • White Wine or Chicken Broth: using white wine in the sauce adds a depth of flavor, but if you prefer to leave it out, substitute it with chicken broth.
  • Slivered Almonds: this final ingredient adds a crunchy texture to the dish.

What’s the best kind of white wine to use in the Swiss cheese sauce?

When cooking with wine, you should always use a wine you’d also enjoy drinking – that way, you know you’ll like the flavor. For this Swiss chicken recipe, I use ½ cup of Sutter Home sauvignon blanc – a dry, crisp, and fruity white wine. Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are also great cooking companions, especially in chicken recipes. (Here’s a secret for you: those little, small bottle 4-packs that you can find in the liquor section of your local grocery store are great for recipes that call for a small amount of wine.)

How to Make Baked Swiss Chicken

This family favorite recipe takes a mere 5 minutes to prep – the definition of a dump-and-bake recipe. Depending on the cut of chicken you use, dinner can be ready in as quickly as 30 minutes!

  • Place seasoned chicken in a baking dish.
  • Top each chicken breast with a slice of Swiss cheese (or two slices for extra cheese).
  • Mix one can of cream of chicken soup with ½ cup of dry white wine, then pour the sauce over the chicken.
  • Bake the chicken at 350 degrees F for 45-60 minutes or until the chicken is done.
  • Add the slivered almonds over the top of the chicken in the last 15 minutes of cooking time.

Prepping the Swiss Chicken

This recipe begins with seasoned boneless skinless chicken breasts. I season my chicken liberally with salt and black pepper on both sides. If you want more flavor, add onion powder, garlic powder, or your favorite all-purpose seasoning blend (like Italian seasoning or an herb blend). Arrange the chicken in a casserole dish and top each piece of chicken with a slice of Swiss cheese.

Making the Creamy White Wine Sauce

Next, it’s time for the 2-ingredient sauce! In a small bowl or measuring cup, mix the Cream of Chicken soup with the white. The alcohol in the wine will cook off, but if you don’t like the flavor of wine, you can substitute it with chicken broth.

A can of Cream of Chicken soup and a small bottle of Sutter Home Sauvignon Blanc white wine -- the two ingredients needed for the Swiss chicken sauce.

Once the delicious sauce is mixed, simply pour it over the chicken, and you’re done! See – five minutes of prep, dinner in no time!

Adding a Crunchy Element

During the final 15 minutes of baking, you will add the slivered almonds to the top of your chicken. This gives the almonds just enough time to toast and turn golden brown without burning! They add the perfect crunch to this delicious, creamy dinner.

If you want a crunchy element but don’t enjoy (or can’t have) almonds, there are other options for a crunchy topping:

  • Seasoned breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter, sprinkled on top of each piece of chicken.
  • Crushed-up butter crackers like Ritz crackers.
  • Crushed croutons – try garlic or cheese croutons for more flavor.
  • Boxed stuffing mix – like Pepperidge Farm or Stove Top stuffing mix – mixed with melted butter.

Cooking Time for Swiss Chicken Casserole

Wondering how long to cook chicken breast in the oven? Most chicken breasts you find in grocery stores these days are very large. This recipe uses a total of about 3 lbs. of chicken breasts. The larger, thick breasts need anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes to cook through in a 350-degree F oven.

Smaller breasts or chicken thighs will cook through in as little as 30 minutes. That’s why I highly recommend using a meat thermometer to know when your dish is ready to come out of the oven. Chicken must be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees (you can usually take it out of the oven at 155 degrees, and it will continue to cook up to temperature while it rests).

What to Serve with Baked Swiss Chicken

You can pair this creamy baked Swiss chicken with almost any side dish you want! My favorite choices are white or brown rice, pasta, a vegetable like roasted broccoli or asparagus, or a simple salad. Here are some go-to side dishes:

Baked Swiss Chicken Recipe Variations and Cook’s Tips

  • Substitute chicken broth for the wine in your sauce.
  • Instead of almonds, try topping your baked chicken breasts with pecans, walnuts, or chopped hazelnuts.
  • Use Cream of Mushroom soup (or your other favorite flavor) instead of the Cream of Chicken.
  • For a quick-cooking dish, slice large chicken breasts in half or purchase smaller 4-ounce chicken breasts. They will cook in about half of the time!
  • If your chicken is not quite cooked through, but the top of the dish is browning too quickly, cover the baking dish with aluminum foil for the remainder of the cooking time.
  • Cooking for two? Half the ingredients in this recipe for smaller portions.
  • Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days. Swiss chicken can easily be prepped ahead of time, and leftovers can be frozen for easy storage.
