Why You’ll Love these Ham and Cheese Crescent Rolls

  • Easy. Thanks to help from cans of store-bought crescent roll dough, this meal comes together with some simple assembly. You don’t even have to pre-cook any of the filling ingredients — just everything together.
  • Affordable. The short list of easy-to-find ingredients results in a satisfying, budget-friendly meal.
  • Family-Friendly. The classic combination of ham and cheese is always a winner. Throw in some broccoli for color, texture, and nutrition, and you’ve got an entire kid-friendly meal or perfect party appetizers in one dish — no sides necessary.

Ingredients

This is just a quick overview of the ingredients that you’ll need for a ham and cheese crescent ring. As always, specific measurements and step-by-step instructions are included in the printable recipe box at the bottom of the post.

  • Crescent roll dough: I like Pillsbury brand best.
  • Broccoli: the frozen baby broccoli florets are great because they’re bite-size and don’t require chopping. You can use regular frozen broccoli florets that you coarsely chop, if you prefer. Thaw the broccoli and drain it well before using.
  • Ham: use leftover ham from a previous meal or purchase diced ham for an easy shortcut.
  • Green onion: for even more savory flavor.
  • Cheese: sharp cheddar cheese is a classic choice, but you can use other varieties if you like. Good options include Monterey Jack, Colby, Colby Jack, Pepper Jack, Gouda, Fontina, and Swiss cheese.
  • Mayonnaise: binds the filling together. I prefer Duke’s brand, but any variety will work.
  • Sour cream: for creamy, tangy, acidic flavor that brightens up the filling.
  • Kosher salt and ground black pepper: enhance the flavors of the other ingredients.

Don’t be intimidated by the fancy appearance of this dish! It comes together quickly and easily with just a handful of simple ingredients, and is so much more delicious than a regular ham and cheese sandwich.

  • Separate dough and arrange the triangles in the shape of a star (or sunburst).
  • Spoon the filling in a ring at the center of the crescent dough.
  • Wrap the dough over the top of the filling.
  • Bake until golden brown, about 25 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Pair the ham and cheese crescent rolls with a side of potato chips for crunch, a simple salad dressed in creamy buttermilk dressing, a Wedge salad, or a Caesar salad. They’re also great alongside coleslawfennel apple slawthree bean salad, or fresh fruit. You might like to offer a bread basket with biscuitscorn muffinsblueberry muffinspumpkin bread, or strawberry bread on the side, as well.

Preparation and Storage Tips

  • Make Ahead: To prep ahead, assemble the crescent ring as instructed. Cover loosely and place in the refrigerator for up to 8 hours before baking. You may need to extend the total cooking time by a minute or two if it’s very cold when it goes into the oven.
  • How to Store: Leftovers will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • How to Reheat: If frozen, thaw the crescent ring in the refrigerator overnight. Place on a baking sheet and warm in a 350°F oven just until heated through, about 15-20 minutes. You can also microwave individual slices until warm.

Recipe Variations

  • Swap out the ham and use cooked chicken (such as the meat from a store-bought rotisserie chicken) or leftover turkey from a holiday meal.
  • Instead of cheddar cheese, use another good melty cheese such as Monterey Jack, mozzarella, Gouda, Swiss, Fontina, Colby, Colby Jack, or Pepper Jack cheese.
  • Use frozen peas instead of broccoli florets.
  • If you prefer to use fresh broccoli florets (instead of frozen), you’ll need to steam or parboil them so that they’re soft before adding them to the ham mixture. You don’t want to end up with crunchy broccoli in your filling.
  • Add herbs or spices to the filling. Chopped fresh parsley, thyme, basil, rosemary, and garlic powder would all be tasty.
  • A dollop of Dijon mustard would be a nice tangy, zesty addition to the filling.

Tips for the Best Ham and Cheese Crescent Rolls Recipe

  • Line the baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil for easy clean-up.
  • Use leftover ham from a previous meal if you have it, or purchase diced ham for a shortcut.
  • Use frozen baby broccoli florets for the best texture. The frozen broccoli is relatively soft when thawed, so you don’t need to steam or parboil it before adding it to the dish. The baby florets are a convenient bite-size and don’t require chopping.
  • Use Pillsbury brand crescent dough sheets for the best quality and flavor. I’ve experimented with store-brand versions and I’m always disappointed.
  • Serve the crescent rolls with a honey mustard sauce for dipping.
