Creamy Honey Mustard Dressing with Mayo is a Versatile Family Favorite

With its sweet, tangy flavor and creamy texture, this honey mustard dressing is a Southern staple thatโs perfect for drizzling over garden salads, crispy fried chicken dipping, or dressing up sandwiches. Itโs quick, easy, and always better made from scratch!
Ingredient Notes and Tips for Success
- Our preferred mayo is Duke’s! You can obviously use any brand that you like, but make sure it’s rich and creamy, since the quality of the mayo will definitely impact the taste and texture of the dressing.
- I’ve shown Dijon mustard here, but I’ve also tested the recipe with yellow mustard. Both options work great! The Dijon provides a zestier bite, while the yellow mustard offers a milder, sweeter flavor (the kids love it!).
- If you like the dressing really sweet, use up to 2 tablespoons of honey. Just taste and adjust to suit your preferences.
- The garlic powder is optional — omit that ingredient if it’s not your “thing.”
- This dressing works well for dairy-free folks if you use dairy-free mayo. Duke’s real mayonnaise is dairy-free, since none of the ingredients contain milk, cream, lactose, or other dairy derivatives. Eggs are not considered dairy, so folks with a milk allergy or lactose intolerance can safely use the mayo.
- The dressing is gluten-free if you use gluten-free mayo and mustard.

How to Make Honey Mustard Dressing
Y’all…this is about as simple as it gets. Whisk everything together and go! You’ll find detailed directions in the recipe card below, but here’s the overview:
- Combine the mayo, mustard, honey, vinegar, and garlic powder in a bowl. Whisk, whisk, whisk until it’s completely smooth.

- Give it a taste, and season with salt and pepper if desired.

Serving Suggestions
Drizzle the creamy honey mustard salad dressing over green salads, use it as a dip for fried chicken tenders, Chick fil A nuggets, French fries, or fresh veggies like broccoli and carrots. You can also spread the creamy sauce on sandwiches (like this club sandwich) and wraps (like this bbq chicken wrap), or serve it alongside grilled meats for tangy, sweet flavor.

Storage Tips
- How to Store: Transfer the honey mustard dressing to an airtight container or jar. Refrigerate for up to 1 week. Stir or shake well before each use, as slight separation may occur. Freezing is not recommended. The mayonnaise base can separate and change texture when thawed.
- Make Ahead Tip: Since the flavors blend and deepen over time, feel free to prepare the dressing a day in advance for even better taste!
Recipe Variations
- For a thicker dressing that you can use as a dip, increase the mayo to ยฝ cup and decrease the vinegar to 1 teaspoon.
- Stir in a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce for a little heat.
- Blend in a tablespoon of plain Greek yogurt or sour cream for a richer, thicker, creamier texture.
- Fresh lemon juice is a fine substitute for the vinegar.
- Add fresh or dried herbs like dill, parsley, or chives for a bright, fresh flavor.
