I’ll give my boys credit for this Chocolate Covered Graham Crackers recipe, even though it’s hardly a “recipe” at all. Ever since the boys began staying home from school back in March, we have prepared countless batches of the easy dessert treats, which remind us of the rich chocolate-covered grahams from Starbucks. The kids have adjusted the recipe over time to test different combinations of ingredients, so I figured that we might as well share our favorite version here (in case you have little ones that might enjoy them, too).
Why You’ll Love These Chocolate-Covered Graham Crackers:
- They’re no-bake, so you don’t even have to turn on the oven;
- They come together in about 5 minutes, and then you just have to wait for them to set;
- You only need 2 ingredients, plus any toppings that you have on hand;
- Your kids can help, so it’s fun entertainment on a quiet day at home;
- There’s only 1 dish to wash at the end!
2-Ingredient Chocolate Covered Graham Crackers
Gibbs first found a recipe for Chocolate Pretzel Breakaways on the back of a Honey Maid Chocolate Graham Crackers box. We started with that exact recipe, and have since tweaked it over time. The version I’m sharing here is our favorite base recipe, which you can use with any of your favorite toppings. Salty and sweet combos are the best!
Ingredients for Chocolate Covered Graham Crackers Recipe
You only need TWO main ingredients to make this super simple snack! And the best part is, you can switch it up depending on your preferences. Keep reading to find a slew of recipe variations. As always, you can find the exact ingredient measurements in the printable recipe card below.
- Graham crackers: I use the classic honey flavor, but Honey Maid also has cinnamon or chocolate graham crackers that would work in this recipe.
- Chocolate chips: milk, dark, white – any kind will work!
- Your favorite toppings: like sprinkles, M&Ms, or pretzels.
How to Make Chocolate-Covered Graham Cracker Snacks
This is just a brief overview of the steps. Below, I’ve detailed more in-depth directions for making chocolate-covered graham crackers.
- Arrange the graham crackers on a baking sheet.
- Melt the chocolate chips using a microwave or double boiler.
- Spread the melted chocolate over the graham crackers.
- Add your toppings of choice.
- Let the chocolate set.
Step 1: Arrange Graham Crackers on a Baking Sheet
Break the graham crackers in half and arrange them on a foil-lined baking sheet. This makes clean-up easy — you won’t even have to wash the tray!
Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
Place the chocolate chips in a bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals just until melted (about 1 minute total). You can also do this over a double boiler on the stovetop if you prefer.
Step 3: Spread Chocolate on Graham Crackers
I use a small offset spatula to easily spread the chocolate on the top of each graham cracker square.
Step 4: Add Toppings
It’s certainly not necessary (the chocolate-covered graham crackers are delicious on their own), but the kids love to follow behind me and sprinkle the tops with some of their favorite toppings like sprinkles, crushed pretzels, candy, and sea salt.
Step 5: Allow Chocolate to Set
The only hard part about this recipe is waiting for the chocolate to set! It takes about 30 minutes at room temperature, or (if you’re like us and you want them ready faster) you can put them in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. The chocolate will be nice and hard when they’re ready to eat.
Preparation and Storage Tips
- When melting the chocolate, be careful not to scorch it with too much heat. If using the microwave, melt the chocolate just until the chips are almost completely melted (a total of about 1 minute). Then just stir, stir, stir and the chocolate will continue to melt smoothly.
- If you’re having trouble melting the chocolate, add a small spoonful of coconut oil to help the chocolate chips melt smoothly.
- Work Quickly: The chocolate starts to set relatively fast, so you’ll want to have your toppings ready. I like to spread the melted chocolate on the graham crackers while the kids follow behind me and sprinkle any of their favorite toppings on the warm chocolate.
- How to store Chocolate Covered Graham Crackers: You do not need to refrigerate chocolate-covered graham crackers. Keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
- I do not recommend freezing these Chocolate Covered Graham Crackers because the chocolate gets condensation on it as the crackers thaw, which results in an undesirable appearance. The graham crackers may also get soggy.
Cook’s Tips and Recipe Variations:
- Any toppings that you like or have on hand will work (or skip the toppings altogether). Some of our favorites include rainbow sprinkles, flaked sea salt, crushed pretzels, and M&M candies. You can also try shredded coconut or chopped salted nuts.
- Chocolate-Covered Graham Crackers with Marshmallows: For that classic s’mores flavor combination, add miniature marshmallows on top of the grahams.
- Chocolate-Covered Graham Crackers with Peanut Butter: Love that chocolate-peanut butter combo? Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on top of the grahams before adding the melted chocolate on top. It works best if you “seal” the peanut butter by fully coating it with chocolate on all sides.
- Use chocolate graham crackers instead of regular graham crackers. Cinnamon graham crackers are also good with white chocolate on top.
- We prefer Ghirardelli brand milk chocolate baking chips because they melt smoothly and taste the best. You can use any chocolate that your family enjoys, though. Try white chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, or semi-sweet chocolate chips.
- Pick the sprinkles or toppings to match a holiday. For instance, use candy corn or orange sprinkles for Halloween; use red and green sprinkles with white chocolate for Christmas. Try red and blue sprinkles for July 4th!
- These disappear very fast, so we always prepare a double batch!
Will chocolate-covered graham crackers get soggy?
These sweet snacks won’t have a chance to get soggy – they go that fast! However, if you store them properly (in an airtight container, and not in the fridge), then no – they will remain perfectly crispy and delicious!
Can I dip the graham crackers in chocolate?
Yes – this is another easy variation on this snack! Dip the crackers rather than spread the chocolate on top of the cracker. You could half-dip or fully coat the graham crackers. But be aware that this might create a thicker layer of chocolate. Add the toppings the same way, and let the crackers set on a parchment-lined sheet to prevent sticking.
