This tater tot casserole with chicken nuggets is the kind of dinner my boys love, and I can throw it together in 15 minutes! Crispy chicken nuggets, creamy sauce, frozen veggies, melty cheddar, and a layer of crispy tater tots all bake together in one dish.

Before You Get Started
A few notes to set you up for success before you start layering:
- Bake the nuggets first. This is the make-or-break step. Pre-baking gives the nuggets a crisp exterior before they get layered into the casserole, so they don’t turn soft under the sauce.
- Don’t thaw the tater tots. Add them straight from the freezer to the top of the casserole. They need that frozen start to crisp up properly in the oven.
- Layer in order, end with tots on top. The tots need direct oven heat to get golden and crispy. Bury them and you’ll end up with soggy potatoes.

How to Make Chicken Nugget Tater Tot Casserole
You only need about 15 minutes of hands-on prep for this easy casserole. Here’s how it comes together:
Step 1: Bake the chicken nuggets
Bake the chicken nuggets according to the package instructions until they’re crispy and golden.
→ Quick tip: throw a few extra nuggets on the tray. The smell will bring the kids running, and they’ll want a few to snack on before the casserole is ready (we call them the “appetizers”).
Homemade Chicken Nuggets: If you have the time and want to skip the freezer aisle, my Homemade Chicken Nuggets work great here. Use about 25 nuggets, enough to cover the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch dish in a single layer.

Step 2: Layer the nuggets in the dish
Preheat the oven to 375°F and spray a 9 x 13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
Arrange the baked nuggets in a single layer across the bottom of the dish. You want them to cover the base evenly, with no big gaps.

Step 3: Whisk and pour the sauce
In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup and milk until smooth.

Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken nuggets. The sauce might look thin, but it’s exactly the right consistency. It thickens as it bakes.

Step 4: Add the veggies and cheese
Sprinkle the frozen mixed vegetables evenly over the sauce, then top with the shredded cheddar cheese.

No need to thaw the veggies first. They’ll cook through in the oven.

Step 5: Top with tater tots
Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single, even layer on top of the cheese.
Spreading them in a single layer isn’t just for looks: it helps them crisp evenly. You want every tot in contact with the heat, not stacked or buried.

Step 6: Bake until crispy and bubbly
Bake the casserole uncovered for 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crispy and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
For an extra-crispy finish, slide the dish under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes at the very end. Keep a close eye on it. Tater tots can go from golden to burned fast.

Let the casserole rest for about 5 minutes before serving so the filling has a chance to set.

Serving Suggestions
This is a full one-dish meal, so it doesn’t need much alongside it. A simple vegetable or a side of fruit rounds out the plate nicely. Some of our favorites are:
If your family likes to dunk their nuggets, set out a few dipping sauces too. Ketchup, barbecue sauce, and honey mustard are classics, but a simple ranch dressing made with my Homemade Ranch Seasoning is a kid favorite.
Storage
Store: Cover leftovers tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
Freeze: This casserole freezes best before baking. Assemble the dish through step 7 (without baking), wrap tightly with foil, and freeze for up to 3 months. Bake straight from frozen, adding 15 to 20 minutes to the total bake time.
Make ahead: Assemble the casserole through step 7, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Let the dish sit on the counter for 30 minutes to come closer to room temperature before it goes in the oven.
Traveling with it? Bake the casserole at home, then cover tightly with foil to keep it warm during the drive. The tots will soften slightly under the foil, so if you want them crispy, pop the dish under the broiler for a minute or two once you arrive. You can also assemble everything at home, transport it cold, and bake it at your destination.
Reheat: Warm leftovers, covered, in a 350°F oven until heated through, about 15 to 20 minutes. Individual portions can be reheated in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you cook the chicken nuggets before adding them to the casserole?
Yes. Bake the nuggets first according to the package instructions before layering them in the dish. Pre-baking gives them a crispy exterior so they don’t go soft under the sauce.
Can you use frozen tater tots in the casserole?
Yes, and you should. Add the tater tots straight from the freezer to the top of the casserole. There’s no need to thaw them first. The frozen start is what helps them crisp up in the oven.
Why is my tater tot casserole soggy?
Soggy tots usually come from one of three things: thawing the tots before baking, burying them under other layers instead of placing them on top, or not baking long enough for the topping to crisp. Stick to a single layer on top, bake the full 45 minutes uncovered, and finish under the broiler if you want extra crunch.
Can I use chicken strips or homemade nuggets instead?
Absolutely. Crispy chicken strips work in place of nuggets. Cut them down so they cover the bottom of the dish in a single layer. My Homemade Chicken Nuggets are another great option if you want to skip the freezer aisle.

Wow, I’m totally a fan of chicken nuggets. Seriously, I can eat them all the time – healthy, tasty and easy to prepare – I will try them by your recipe this time. Thanks!
Thank you, Carla!
What if you don’t like cream of chicken soup can you use a roasted garlic parmesan sauce instead?
Hi, Angela! I’m not familiar with the roasted garlic sauce in particular, but if it has a similar consistency to the condensed soup, then it should work well. If the sauce is thinner than the condensed soup, you might want to omit the milk so that you don’t thin it out too much. Hope you enjoy!
How would you travel (20 min) with this? Should I bake first and then wrap it up well to keep it warm, or would the tots lose their crispiness from the drive?
Hi Emily! It would probably still be okay. Or, you could layer everything and bake when you got there. Hope this helps!
HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT BIRTHDAY AND A WONDERFUL YEAR FILLED WITH LOTS OF LOVE AND HAPPINESS. AGAIN, I LOVE YOUR SITE.
DIANE
Aw, thank you so much, Diane! You totally made my day! 🙂

Awesome, Jodi! Happy birthday to you, too! Thank you for your kind note! 🙂
What a great meal for weeknights!
Dumb question, but you cook the nuggets first before adding them to the casserole?
Hey, Anna! It’s not a dumb question. 🙂 Step 1 in the recipe says to bake the chicken nuggets according to the package instructions. That helps them not only be warm when they go in the casserole, but it also gives them the crisp exterior that we all love. Enjoy!

Thank you, Vera! You can’t go wrong with this combination of ingredients! 🙂
Hi Blair, I made this on 11 Oct 2023, exactly as written although for my location, no tater tots but we can get mini hash browns so I went with those. Very tasty and easy to put together, this was well liked by the family. Thank you for a great recipe.
Thank you for trying it out, Lee! We’re so glad you enjoyed it.
well isn’t this a fun recipe. not for me though. my friend should like it. she lives on nuggets, tater tots, and hamburgers. she won’t eat veggies unless they are battered, fried, and slathered in dips and sauces. i’ll give her the recipe. she’s so busy taking diet pills and thinking her obesity happened TO her. it didn’t – we participate in our symptoms (she doesn’t want to hear it, she is convinced of her own closed thinking, like christians waiting for jesus). i’m sure she’ll find a way to triple the calories of the casserole. she’ll likely go through the drive thru and get some mcdonalds wrappers, then portion her casserole into the wrappers, in an attempt to further self soothe. she’s been taking the pills for years, and hasn’t lost a single pound! if she had kids, which she doesn’t, she’d reject them if they didn’t fall our of her womb in Happy Meal Boxes.
To Amma. Could you attack any more people? Overweight, poss a depressed
lonely Christisn person you call a friend? And to top it off you criticize her religious belief?
If you don’t like the recipe and if this is what you think of your friend, why not scroll on by?
The recipe is yummy and delicious thanks for sharing it with everyone.
Thank you, Melissa!
Can this casserole be frozen? If so would be the best method?
Hi Debbi! We would recommend freezing the assembled casserole before baking. Then, bake straight from frozen, adding a few minutes as needed. We hope you enjoy!
