Just in time for Mardi Gras, this Bananas Foster Protein Shake is a healthy way to indulge in the holiday! Bananas, Greek yogurt, rum extract, spices and even some caramel give this nutritious breakfast or snack all of the flavors of your favorite Southern dessert — minus the guilt!
When I think of New Orleans and Mardi Gras, a few things instantly come to mind (honestly, I’ve never actually BEEN to Mardi Gras, so these are just very stereotypical ideas!): beads, parades, booze!, muffuletta sandwiches, po’ boys, jambalaya, beignets, and of course…Bananas Foster!
In order to keep things a bit healthier around here, I thought that it would be fun to put a lighter twist on the classic flavors. Since the dessert is normally made from bananas and vanilla ice cream, a thick, creamy vanilla-based banana smoothie was born. And instead of the typical sauce made from butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and rum, I grabbed that same flavor combination by including rum extract, cinnamon, and caramel sauce in my protein shake. Ta-da! All of the goodness of Bananas Foster in a smoothie that is SO thick, I like to eat it with a spoon. It’s almost like soft-serve banana ice cream!
You know who else LOVES this shake? My boys! When they hear my NutriBullet blending the ingredients, they automatically come running to the kitchen (and salivating like Pavlov’s Dogs!).
Spence loves this shake with his breakfast or as a mid-morning snack…
and Casey will chug it at any time of day!
This recipe is about 250 calories (depending on the type of milk and protein powder you use), so it makes a great base for your breakfast, or you can split it in half for a lighter snack. If you’re eating it as your main course for a meal, I would top it with some granola, nuts, or nut butter to give it a little bit more staying-power. My boys share one recipe and it’s the perfect amount for them. Enjoy, my friends!
Oh, and one more note: the key to the thick, creamy texture of this shake is definitely the FROZEN banana! Don’t skip that! It’s a great way to use up overripe bananas, too. When you have dark bananas on your counter, just peel them, slice them, and them wrap them individually. Stick the sliced bananas into the freezer and pull them out as you need them.
