Despite the higher-than-usual temperatures this week, the boys and I are focused on “winter.” With that in mind, we have discussed that some birds fly south for the winter, while others stay in our yard. For those birds that decide to stay in Virginia, it can be hard to find food at this time of year. To help them out, Gibbs and Casey made feeders!

This is actually an activity that I remember doing with my neighbors when I was a child. Clearly, it stuck with me!

I think that my boys’ favorite part of this whole activity was “hunting” for the supplies. I had Gibbs climbing among the trees on our property looking for the perfect pinecones.

Pinecones Hanging

We started by tying twine in a loop around the top of each pinecone.

I then smeared the pinecones with peanut butter and let each boy roll them around in bowls of bird seed. Quick, easy, and fun.

Finally, we hung them on some trees for the birds to feast on.

We will be watching closely to see if any birds actually find them, or if the dogs and the goats get to them first!
