Who knew that dyeing Easter eggs could be such a great rainy day activity? By coloring our eggs on the front porch, I managed to avoid a colored mess in my kitchen while the boys got some fresh air and entertainment. Win-win!
In order to keep this age-appropriate, we made some very basic eggs. Here are my tips for Dyeing Easter Eggs with Toddlers:
(1) Do this activity outside (even if it’s raining!). It would be way too stressful to worry about spilled dye in the house!
(2) Keep the number of eggs to a minimum. We only used 6. This was the perfect number, because it only required one round of dipping. If we had tried to do multiple batches of eggs (because they wouldn’t all fit in the cups at the same time), my boys would have lost interest.
(3) Give the kids some direction (i.e., explain to them what they’re doing and how to do it, and help them as necessary), but allow them the independence to pick their eggs and to drop them in their desired colors. We had some big splashes and some mixed colors, but that’s okay. The boys loved it and they were invested in the activity.
(4) Manage expectations! Your eggs will be a very pale pastel color, because toddlers are impatient and do not want to wait a long time for “vibrant” eggs. It’s really no problem and they look pretty! And don’t even think about fancy crayon decorating or intricate designs. Not necessary!
