Dr. Seuss is one of our absolute favorite authors (Hop on Pop was the first book that Gibbs wanted to read repeatedly), and March 2 just happens to be his birthday. Many communities across the country also celebrate “Read Across America Day” on March 2 (no coincidence there). Even as a college student, I joined in the fun by volunteering at local elementary schools where I read to the students and participated in book-related activities. This week, in anticipation of the upcoming “holiday,” I am continuing the celebrations in my own house!
As I mentioned, we love Dr. Seuss, and The Lorax is definitely one of our favorite books (and movies). As a result, it was only natural to begin our week-long celebration of Dr. Seuss by creating our own Truffula Trees!
This was one of the easiest crafts that we’ve done yet. You will only need:
(1) Some green playdough (see this post for my easy homemade recipe, although store bought would work great too)
(2) Pipe cleaners
(3) Large pom-poms
I picked up these “sparkle pom-poms” at Michaels, and Gibbs helped pull out the largest pom-poms from each bag.
My love:
Once we had our supplies spread out on our table, we just poked a pipe cleaner into each pom-pom – no glue required!
Then we stuck our “trees” into the green playdough.
And within a few minutes, we had an entire Truffula Tree forest!
Our celebration continues all week, so stay tuned for more Dr. Seuss fun!
