Jar filled with Lego Duplos for an easy DIY Father's Day Gift Idea

Buying gifts for men is always hard! It seems like Keith rarely needs or wants anything, which can make material items seem like a waste of money. But I do know one thing that he always enjoys, and that’s spending time doing fun activities with his three boys…making THIS the perfect gift!

The kids and I recently sat down together and brainstormed a long list of their favorite activities to do with Dad. It wasn’t hard, since he keeps us constantly on the go! Plus, each child had their favorites, so our jar quickly filled up when we began writing these different adventures onto individual building blocks. I know that Keith will love the thought behind the gift, as well as the seemingly endless stash of readily available options for those precious Saturday afternoons when we happen to have some free time! And as we check off each item from our “list,” the boys will literally AND figuratively be building special memories with their Father.

That’s a gift to last a lifetime!

So what exactly went inside Keith’s jar? What are the kids’ favorite ways to spend time with their Dad? Well, let’s start by making one thing clear: whatever these boys do always involves food! So if you’re gifting Dad with a jar of activities, you’ll probably want to include some snacks to have on hand as well!

For instance, I recently caught Keith and Casey diligently working on one of Casey’s new Lego sets that he received for his birthday…while also munching on some Horizon Snack Grahams!

Another favorite father-son activity? Watching a movie!

This particular afternoon included a Thomas the Tank Engine movie, as well as some Horizon Cheddar Snack Crackers…

  1. What a cute gift idea, Blair! Homemade gifts are always the best, especially one like this. Sounds like your husband is a wonderful father!

        1. Hi, Courtney! Yes, these are Lego Duplos (they just seemed easier to write on, but either size will work). I have no idea how many I used — maybe about 12-15. Hope that helps! 🙂

          1. This is so sweet. Do you have a template for that tag?’building memories with dad?

          2. Hi, Laurie! I’m sorry, I don’t. 🙁 I just used some LEGO stickers that my son had received with a gift package.

        1. Hi, Cheri! No, unfortunately I don’t have a way to replicate that exact tag. I just used some stickers that we had on hand. It would be really cute to have your kids make (or decorate) a tag of their own, though!

  2. I’ve been surfing on-line more than three hours as of late, yet I by no means discovered any attention-grabbing article
like yours. It is beautiful worth sufficient for me.

In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made excellent content as
you probably did, the internet can be much more helpful
    than ever before.

  3. Thanks Blair for giving fabulous DIY fathers day gift ideas. It’s such an very creative gift guide for dad and children can easily make themselves for their loving dad.

  4. Oh, I just loved this post, Blair! Such a beautiful family you have 🙂 Memories are what it’s all about and those adorable boys are very lucky!

    1. Thank you, Robyn! I agree…the memories are so special! It’s one of my favorite things about having a blog, too…most of these moments are captured in one place!

  5. Great article! I was looking for a link for a printable tag like you have on the jar; is that in the article somewhere? I might have missed it.

    1. Hi, Micah! You know, I wish that I did have a printable tag. Instead, I just used some Lego stickers that my son got for his birthday last month and printed out the letters using Microsoft Word. Nothing fancy! 🙂

  6. Hey Blair,

Absolutely LOVE the DIY Father’s Day Lego cubes.

My two little ones have a whole cupboard full of lego so it’s an interesting and fun way to make use of it.

Great content on your site and have enjoyed reading some of your articles this evening.

    Thanks
    Selina

  9. Wow! This is such a great idea and amazing way to build memories with dad! I thought I also might do this for my oldest son on his birthday with some of his favourite activities and places to visit.

    Thank you 🙂

  10. Hi Blair, this article make me feeling miss my dad after reading your article. This is really good idea for Father’s Day gift. Thanks for sharing.

  11. I would like to see more posts like this. I definitely enjoyed every bit of it and I have you bookmarked to see new information on your blog.

  12. Do you have a print off for that jar label? Love this idea. Just made it with my son for my husbands birthday. Thanks for the idea!

    1. Hi, Brittany! I actually don’t. 🙁 I used some Lego stickers that my mom had given my boys, but I bet you can find a similar logo or lego design online to use if you want to create something similar on your own.

        1. Hi, Ali! I used the big mason jar that holds 4 cups. That’s a good size to accommodate the larger Lego Duplo pieces. 🙂

  16. I was looking for a easy present to make my dad. I was scrolling around when I saw this easy and cute idea of yours! You are SO creative. I had many legos at home so This present was easily done. I look forward on giving him my present.

    P. S. I copied some of your ideas. Hope you don’t mind!

  17. Love this idea but confused by the application. Do you pull a lego out with what you want to do with dad each time and then build a stack next to the jar or just use it to think of ideas of what to do and keep the legos in the jar? I know I’m probably way over thinking this lol so I apologize ahead of time.

    1. Hey, Allie! There’s no right or wrong way to do this. We looked at it as a way to collect some of our favorite memories with dad, so the kids wrote things on the blocks that they had already done with my husband. If you prefer, you can compile a list of memories that you hope to create, write each of those ideas on a block, and give those to Dad as well — kind of like a “bucket list.” Again, any way you want to approach it is wonderful — I’m sure Dad will love the thought behind it, no matter what! 🙂

  18. I made this today with my kiddos, turned out super cute! My son is 2.5 so our intent was to use the jar over the next year to make new memories, things they haven’t already done yet. I thought it would be a cute idea to do a new jar every year, sort of a family tradition moving forward, especially since the activities will continue to change as the kids get older. I used Duplo square legos, and I must have had a smaller mason jar because I could only fit 10 legos. I noticed many people were looking for a template/printable for the card. I just googled an image of legos, copied it onto my word document where I had typed the “Building Memories with Dad” title, sized it to fit, and then printed on card stock (in color). Turned out great! Would definitely recommend this gift, very meaningful and special.

    1. That’s such a fun approach, Whitney! Thanks for sharing the tips about creating the card, too. So helpful!

  19. Do you share the tag you made for your jar? I would love to use this for my K-5 program at church.

    1. Hi, Lisa! I’m sorry, but I just used some Lego stickers that one of my boys had received years ago. I don’t have a computer form that I can share. 🙁

    1. Hi, Margaret! I’m sorry, I don’t. The label is just something that I made with some stickers that my kids had — it’s not a digital file.

  20. I made a tag but I’m not sure how to add it in the comments. If anyone knows how I could do that, I am happy to share.

    1. Hi, Jen! No, unfortunately it’s not a printable tag — just some stickers that I used to make a homemade tag. 🙂

  21. What kind of blocks are these? I’m having trouble finding ones that are smaller than mega blocks but bigger than Legos because that’s what it looks like would fit in a large jar.

    1. Hi, Shelby! These were Lego Duplo, which are the larger Legos for younger kids (but not quite as big as Mega Blocks). 🙂

    1. Hi, Michelle! I’m sorry, I don’t. Those were just stickers that I used to create that particular tag. I bet you could find similar clipart online, though. 🙂

  22. I found your site looking for easy, creative and fun craft ideas for kids ages 4-18. I followed the link to “Building Memories With Dad,” and now I can’t stop crying.

What a beautiful family! Thank you for sharing your precious family photos. There is nothing better than a doting dad spending quality time with his children. That last picture of your beaming husband and gorgeous baby nearly broke my heart.

I’m an African American Air Force Brat, and I was a daddy’s girl. I live in Hampton, VA and lost my own dad to COVID a few years ago. He would have loved any of the handmade gifts on your site.

    1. Thank you for such a kind note, Lisa. It makes me really happy to know that the idea resonated with you. I know you must have so many wonderful memories of your dad!
