Put together this easy Easter Candy Counting Game for a fun way to entertain your little ones this season!
Do you remember our Candy Corn Counting Game from last fall? Well, that was such a hit around here that I figured I should think of something similar for the spring. By using an egg carton for sorting and some pastel-colored Easter chocolates, this was perfectly seasonal fun!
As you can see from the photo above, this activity requires very few materials. I saved a couple of egg cartons from the grocery store, purchased some Color Coding Labels (round stickers) from the dollar store, and pulled out some of the kids’ favorite Easter candy: Bunny Mix M&M’s.
I put a sticker with a number in each of the egg carton’s twelve cups. For Casey, I started with 1 and went straight through to 12. To make it a bit harder for Gibbs, I used bigger numbers and mixed them up.
I gave each child a small bowl of the M&M’s and explained the directions (place the correct number of candies in each cup). Gibbs immediately went to work counting out his chocolates and placing them in the correct holes. First, though, he made sure that he would be allowed to eat some when he was finished.
Casey, by contrast, immediately started eating the candy…and didn’t worry too much about what he was supposed to be doing.
With a little bit of guidance, though, Casey eventually caught on and filled up his tray perfectly. He also had the idea to match the color of the M&M’s with the color of the round label. It just happened to work out that I had pink, green, and yellow M&M’s to match the pink, green, and yellow stickers. Yet another twist on the activity!
I would have to agree with the boys: the best kind of games are those that involve sweets! This would also work well with jelly beans or just about any other small candy that you have on hand.
Happy Easter season!
