I don’t think that anyone can truly appreciate the importance of a good night’s rest until they are a new parent. I certainly took my 8-hours-per-night “requirement” for granted when I was a single gal, and it wasn’t until I gave birth to my first child that I realized how terrible it feels to plod through my days in an endless cycle of exhaustion and sleep deprivation! And while I know that restful sleep is important for my own health, I also realize that it’s even more crucial for my little guys. That’s why I’m happy to be partnering with Mattress Firm to help teach other parents How to Select Your Child’s First Bed, and how to ensure that all of our children establish healthy sleep routines.
As our kids grow up, their beds tend to grow right along with them! If you’re like me, when you were pregnant you probably researched, agonized, and price-checked a variety of crib mattresses before adding anything to your new baby registry. Before long, our little ones outgrow those tiny mattresses that we so carefully selected, and we’re faced with another similar dilemma. What to buy next? And since purchasing mattresses for our children is an important decision that is connected to their overall health, it’s definitely a choice that should not be taken lightly. We should all replace our mattresses every 8 years (and our pillows every 2 years!), so it’s nice to know that Mattress Firm supports people in every developmental phase of their life. The company is a wealth of information when it comes to buying mattresses for toddlers, teenagers, and adults, keeping us all healthy and happy as we grow (or…age)!

If you are in the market for your child’s first “big kid” bed, here are a few helpful tips:
- School-age children need 10-12 hours of sleep per night
- As your child grows, their mattress should support their development. As their bones mature, children need a sleep surface that provides the necessary support to avoid spinal problems later in life.
- Other considerations when selecting a mattress include (1) size (a full or queen size bed is popular with a lot of parents because it offers more space for family story time, sleep-overs with friends, and future growth); (2) firmness (your little one needs firm support, but also enough cushion to make the bed comfortable); and (3) breathing sensitivities (synthetic-filled mattresses are more resistant to dust mites and allergens).
- In order to ease the transition from crib to toddler bed, make the process fun! Bring your child with you to shop for his new mattress, and give him a vote when selecting new bedding. When we moved Gibbs out of his crib, we decided that it was also time to redecorate his room from a baby’s nursery into a “big kid” room. Not only did he help to select the quilt and sham for his bed, but he also picked out the paint color for his walls. When he first selected a “John Deere-green” at the paint shop, we carefully “steered” him towards a more neutral, palatable color. He was thrilled with his “green room,” and we were relieved that he embraced his new environment…bed, walls, and all!
And if you have moved beyond the “baby years” and you’re instead looking for a larger bed for your preteen or teenager, be sure to check out these Tips for Buying a Teen’s Mattress. Again, Mattress Firm is knowledgeable and ready to help!
Since I’m always happy to share Stuff We Love, I also wanted to let you know about these awesome products that we have been enjoying around here. They help this mom rest better, which we know is a good thing!
In my opinion, any child (regardless of age!) should have a waterproof mattress cover under the sheets on his bed to protect the mattress below. Why risk overnight accidents, a sick kid who cannot get to the bathroom in time, or even just a spilled beverage? These mattress pads are mandatory in my house, and I particularly love the Lux Living Premium Elite mattress protector from Protect-A-Bed. They keep my kids’ beds “safe,” and they give me peace of mind! These cotton terry protectors are not only waterproof, but they also provide an allergen barrier, a dust mite barrier, and they come with a 10-year warranty. Love it!
And you know what I have recently discovered for myself? These amazing Coconut and Lavender Bliss Pillows from Mattress Firm! For years, I have purchased lavender-scented aromatherapy pillow spray because I love that it makes my bed smell good, and that the scent helps me relax and fall asleep easily. With these new pillows, I don’t even need to bother with sprays anymore. The Lavender Bliss Pillow features premium memory foam blended with natural lavender oil. This supportive, plush feeling pillow features ventilated channel technology to ensure maximum breathability, and is molded to ensure consistency and durability. The lavender oil is a sleep aid that has been shown to promote relaxation and sleep quality. I’m resting easy these days, and now so can one of you!
