Hi, friends! I have another easy and fun activity to share today, which is sure to get you and your family in the spirit of the holidays. The boys and I had so much fun with this project – it was definitely a favorite of the season.
Have you read Jan Brett’s book, Gingerbread Friends? If not, I highly recommend it! In the story, the little gingerbread boy heads out on the town searching for a companion. Meanwhile, Mattie is working hard at home to bake and decorate more gingerbread friends to join the gingerbread boy.
The book includes a recipe for gingerbread cookies, which inspired this activity. In the interest of full disclosure, however, I will openly admit that I did not make these gingerbread cookies from scratch (as the book suggests). Instead, I bought a pouch of good ol’ Betty Crocker Gingerbread Cookie Mix. After adding some butter, egg, and water, my dough was ready! That’s just the right amount of effort for this mom of 3 little tykes!
After we read the book Gingerbread Friends, Keith held the baby while Gibbs, Casey, and I spent some time in the kitchen. I rolled out our gingerbread dough and then handed the boys some cookie cutters.
They enjoyed this part of the process, but what they REALLY loved was eating the dough. I think that they probably ate as much dough as they cut. That’s part of the fun, though, isn’t it?!
Check out that cheek full of cookie dough!
By the time they were done, there was flour all over the kitchen…and all over Casey.
I then baked the cookies for about 10 minutes and left them to cool on wire racks.
After dinner, we pulled out some decorating supplies and really added a festive touch to our treats!
I spread some icing on each cookie and let the boys have fun with the sprinkles and other decorations. They took this job very seriously (and again, ate just as many decorations as they put on the cookies)!
Their finished products were true masterpieces…
Merry Christmas, and enjoy some quality time with your family this season too!
