Do you know what a Banoffee Pie is?

I’ve heard of the dessert for years, but I don’t think that I’ve ever actually tried a slice! According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, a Banoffee Pie is “an English dessert pie made from bananas, cream and toffee.” What’s not to like about that, right? And when my friend Jen shared these Chocolate Banana Toffee Layer Bars on her decadent baking blog last year, I was immediately reminded of the delicious flavor combination.

Instead of toffee, this protein shake uses caramel extract and an optional drizzle of caramel syrup to accomplish a similar flavor. Paired with bananas, it’s HEAVENLY! Plus, the frozen banana makes the base of this smoothie so incredibly creamy, that you’ll swear you’re enjoying an ice cream milkshake!

As an added bonus, this smoothie is a great way to use up overripe bananas that are sitting on your counter! When I have some excess bananas, I just peel them, slice them, and put them in individual baggies in the freezer. That way I always have some frozen fruit ready to go in the morning when I want to toss it in my blender!

Tips For Making This Banofee Pie Dessert

You can find caramel extract (or caramel flavoring) in the baking aisle of most grocery stores — right alongside the vanilla extract. If you have trouble locating it, just order some (the internet has everything)!

I like to use Quest Vanilla Milkshake Protein Powder or Quest Salted Caramel Protein Powder because I think it has the creamiest, thickest consistency of any other brands that I’ve tried…but you can feel free to use YOUR favorite protein powder here (just make sure that it meets any of your specific dietary needs, such as dairy-free or gluten-free).

After enjoying this smoothie for breakfast for the last 3 or 4 months, I’m so excited to finally share it with all of you. I know that you’re going to LOVE it! Because really…who can complain with dessert for breakfast?!

  1. I was just looking up banana pudding recipes last night because I had such a craving for it! This smoothie looks SO good, Blair! I’ve only had banoffee pie once before, but I remember it being absolutely delicious. I love that you made that pie into a smoothie…so creative!

  2. Im OBSESSED with banoffee combo! Smoothie form is even better! Can’t wait to try this beauty!

  3. Love the banoffee pie flavor!! I am hooked all things banana. I think I eat about 4 bananas a day. I know, it’s insane. This smoothie would be perfect for satiating my intense banana cravings.

    1. Wow…that’s a lot of bananas! 🙂 BUT, if you’re going to eat a lot of something, then at least it’s about as healthy as you can get!

  4. OMG ! I am sure this is HEAVENLY !!! I have a whole lot of frozen bananas in my fridge .. do you think it will work without the protein powder ?

    1. Yes, I definitely think that it will work without the protein powder! You will probably need to add some sweetener of your choice (honey, maple syrup, sugar, stevia, whatever…) because my protein powder is pretty sweet on its own. Plus, you could add some greek yogurt and/or some vanilla extract. The protein powder just makes the consistency of the shake a bit thicker (in addition to the added protein/sweetness/vanilla flavoring). Hope you enjoy!! 🙂
