How to make a Creamy Spinach Dip Recipe:

I originally received this recipe from a friend here in Madison years and years ago. It was served at a church potluck and I instantly requested the details — I knew that I needed to have it.

The fact is, this is hardly a recipe at all! It seriously doesn’t get much easier, which is a good thing because the holiday season is already complicated enough!

What is spinach dip made of?

You’ll need the following 5 ingredients:

You know that I love a good shortcut, so I take some help from a packet of seasoning mix to give the spinach dip plenty of zesty flavor. You can find this particular packet in the soup aisle at your grocery store, since many folks use it to make vegetable soup.

First, squeeze the thawed spinach dry with a towel. This is very important, because it prevents your dip from becoming watery. You want and thick, creamy dip — so this is the key!

Next, stir together the ingredients, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. So easy, right?!

What is best to dip in Spinach Dip?

You can’t serve a bowl of Knorr spinach dip on its own, so here are a few great options that go well with the creamy dip:

  • Bagel chips or other sturdy crackers
  • Fresh raw vegetables such as carrot sticks, broccoli florets, celery sticks or cauliflower florets
  • Chunks of sourdough bread or slices of French baguette

Cook’s Tips and Recipe Variations:

  • Omit the red bell pepper and make a 4-ingredient Spinach Dip!
  • Feel free to stir in other minced veggies for a colorful, flavorful dip!
  • Make a healthy spinach dip by using light mayonnaise and low fat sour cream.
  • How do you thicken spinach dip? The key to a thick, creamy dip is really making sure that you squeeze all of the liquid out of the thawed spinach.
  • Does spinach dip need to be refrigerated? Yes! The dip will stay fresh on the counter at room temperature for up to 2 hours. After that, it’s safest to keep the dip in the refrigerator.
  • Can the dip be made a day ahead? Yes! The dip will last in the fridge for about 3-4 days. Just make sure to give it a good stir again right before serving.
  • Can you freeze this dip? No. The sour cream and mayonnaise will “break” when thawed and give the dip a very unappetizing texture.
  • Is spinach dip keto? This dip has 8 grams of fat, 0.8 grams of sugar, 2.3 grams of carbs and only 87 calories in each 2-tablespoon serving — making it a keto friendly appetizer!
  • Is this dip gluten free? It’s not clear on the Knorr website whether or not the seasoning mix is gluten-free. Since the product ingredients are always changing, they suggest checking the packet in order to determine if it’s gluten-free. It should be marked accordingly.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 (1.4 ounce) package Knorr Vegetable Soup mix
  • 1 (9 or 10 ounce) package frozen, chopped spinach, THAWED
  • 1 (16 ounce) container sour cream
  • 1 small red bell pepper, seeded and finely diced
  • For serving: raw veggies, crackers, chips, or bread

Instructions

  • Squeeze spinach dry. In order to get most of the water out, I like to wrap the cooked spinach in a dish towel and wring out the water by squeezing the spinach in the towel.
  • In a medium bowl, stir together mayonnaise, vegetable soup mix (just the dry mix), spinach, sour cream, and bell pepper until completely combined.
  • Cover and refrigerate for about 2 hours (or overnight) before serving.

  1. Mmm I love a good spinach dip! This is definitely perfect for those holiday parties and gatherings. And I can see why this disappears fast! Love how easy and full of flavor this is!

  2. I think I will try this with reduced fat mayo and non fat sour cream and have it on baked potatoes. Grocery run tomorrow.

    1. Love the idea of using it on potatoes, Suzie! I bet that will be delicious! Let me know how it works with the lower fat substitutes! 🙂

  3. I have made this recipe for many years and add some chopped water chestnuts for a little crunch. It’s great too. Also, i have made it with low fat sour cream and lite mayo and it was very tasty.

    1. The water chestnuts sound like a great addition, Barb! And it’s good to know that a lightened-up version works equally well!

  4. I never bother to cook the spinach, just let it defrost, and then squeeze the water out. Retains more nutrients and makes the recipe even easier!! A family favourite here, and friends always love it too!!

    1. Hah! I love a good shortcut, Belinda, and I’ve actually done the same thing! I’m going to update the recipe right now to reflect that! Thanks for the reminder. 🙂
