Spring is here, which means that sweet-tasting strawberries are finally available in the grocery stores and (almost) ripe-for-the-pickin’ in the nearby fields. This easy Strawberry Banana Smoothie has made a regular appearance on our breakfast table because my boys just can’t get enough! Whether you use fresh strawberries that you freeze yourself, or a bag of frozen strawberries from the store, this Strawberry Greek yogurt smoothie is a healthy breakfast option that your family can enjoy all year round.

Are Strawberry Banana Smoothies healthy?

If you’re wondering which strawberry banana smoothies are good for weight loss, you’ll have to look at the ingredients. You can fill your glass with nourishing fruits, vegetables, vitamins and minerals, or you can purchase a store-bought smoothie that’s loaded with sugar, fat and calories. For instance, the small McDonald’s Strawberry Banana Smoothie has 190 calories, 39 grams of sugar, and just 2 grams of protein. Not the best stats!

By contrast, this healthy smoothie recipe has less than 150 calories per serving, more than 7 grams of protein, and less than 20 grams of sugar. It’s perfect for almost any diet or nutritional goals because it can be adapted to suit your needs. Add nut butter for healthy fats, use vegan ingredients for a plant-based option, or throw in some spinach for an undetectable veggie boost. The fiber and protein in this banana smoothie can help you stay satisfied and may even help you lose weight!

How to make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie with Yogurt:

This truly could not be easier! You only need a handful of simple ingredients and about 5 minutes. Just don’t forget to freeze your fruit the night before — it’s the key to an icy cold, super-thick shake!

Ingredients:

  • Banana
  • Strawberries
  • Greek yogurt
  • Milk
  • Salt {maybe a surprise ingredient, but it just balances out the sweetness of the fruit — kind of like adding salt to cakes or cookies}
  • Ice cubes {keep the smoothie thick and frosty without adding extra calories}

Step 1: Freeze the Fruit!

One key to the thick, creamy texture of this smoothie is definitely the FROZEN banana and strawberries! Don’t skip that step! It’s a great way to use up overripe bananas, too.

When you have dark bananas on your counter, just peel them, slice them, and wrap them individually. Stick the sliced bananas into the freezer and pull them out as you need them. Similarly, you can freeze fresh sliced strawberries in 1/2-cup portions, or you can purchase a bag of frozen strawberries at the store.

Step 2: Place all of the Ingredients in a Blender

Add the banana, strawberries, yogurt, milk, salt and ice cubes to the blender.

Step 3: Puree until Smooth

Blend until thick, creamy and smooth!

What to serve with a Strawberry Banana Smoothie:

Pair this smoothie with other satisfying breakfast options such as:

You can also make it a strawberry banana smoothie bowl by pouring the thick, creamy smoothie in a large bowl and topping the bowl with slices of fresh banana, fresh berries, granola, nuts and seeds. Eat it with a spoon, rather than sipping it through a straw! If you have a very high powered blender (such as a Vitamix or Blendtec), you can reduce the milk to 1/4 cup and have an ultra-thick smoothie bowl that’s perfect for a spoon.

Health Benefits:

This recipe yields enough for two substantial servings. Each serving of banana strawberry smoothie includes 146 calories, 2 grams of fat, 27 grams of carbohydrates and 7.5 grams of protein. You get the vitamins and minerals from the two different kinds of fruit, the fiber from the fruit, and the protein and calcium from the yogurt and milk.

Cook’s Tips and Recipe Variations:

  • Using frozen fruit is the key to a thick, creamy smoothie. I like to slice overripe bananas, wrap them individually, and then stash them in the freezer to grab for smoothies whenever we need them.
  • You can start with fresh strawberries (and slice them and freeze them in 1/2-cup portions) or you can purchase a bag of unsweetened frozen strawberries in the freezer section at the grocery store.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon juice or orange juice to the smoothie for a bright, fresh burst of flavor.
  • We use vanilla flavored or strawberry flavored Greek-style yogurt, but you can substitute with plain Greek yogurt to reduce the amount of sugar in the smoothie. If you’re using plain yogurt, I suggest adding a dash of vanilla extract for flavor, as well as a bit of honey or other sweetener of choice (if desired).
  • I use 2% milk in the smoothies because that’s what my boys prefer; however, you can substitute with any variety of milk or non-dairy milk alternative (such as almond milk).
  • Instead of milk or almond milk, you can use orange juice as the liquid for your smoothie. It won’t be as creamy, but that touch of citrus will be delicious!
  • Make a Strawberry Banana Spinach Smoothie by adding a handful of baby spinach leaves to the blender. It won’t change the taste of the smoothie, but it will add some great nutrients!
  • Prepare a Strawberry Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie by adding a tablespoon or two of peanut butter to the blender for staying power and healthy fats.
  • Make it a Strawberry Banana Oatmeal Smoothie by including a 1/4-cup of raw oats in the blender. It will thicken the drink, add fiber, and make it even more filling.
  • For a dessert treat, turn this recipe into a Strawberry Banana Milkshake. Instead of the yogurt, use vanilla or strawberry ice cream!
