Gosh, it seems like it’s been awhile since I shared a craft on the blog — and it’s funny to think that these simple activities are really how the blog got started! Now that my older boys are in school and sports, we don’t have as much free time to sit quietly working on projects. That said, they still love it when we do, and these easy arts and crafts ideas are fun ways to spend a few minutes together. Plus, with a wide-open summer ahead of us, I’m sure you’ll be seeing more of these projects as I try to keep everyone busy and out of trouble!

I’m going to let the photos do most of the talking here, since there aren’t really any specific instructions. Take our ideas and use them to create your own masterpiece!

But first, a quick backstory:

These fairy gardens originally came about out of trial and error. You see, when we were in Joann Fabrics over spring break a few months ago, Casey spotted the fairy garden supplies in the floral department. When he saw the little houses, he instantly wanted to create his own little “village” — because he LOVES Minecraft and basically dreamed of designing his own Minecraft world in “real life.” And since he loves gardening, we even got his grandmother involved with a shopping trip at Lowe’s. She and Casey selected numerous beautiful house plants, bought the necessary potting soil, and created a perfect little garden for his houses.

Since I have 3 boys, they don’t like me to call these “Fairy Gardens” — there’s not a fairy anywhere near our house! Instead, they used gnomes in their gardens and prefer to call these “Forests” or “Villages.” Whatever. I still call them Fairy Gardens!

Unfortunately, there were a few problems with Casey’s original garden:

  • He had to water the plants to keep them alive (which is sometimes hard for a 4-year-old to remember);
  • When he did remember to water the plants, he also got water all over the accessories in the garden (the houses, the figurines, etc.) — making it quite a mess;
  • We had to keep the garden on our covered front porch so that the rain wouldn’t destroy it; AND
  • Even when it was on our porch, the weather ultimately ruined it — we had strong winds one night and woke up to a garden that was strewn across our lawn…and a very unhappy child!

That’s when a lightbulb went off in my Mom Brain! I salvaged the houses, gnomes, and other accessories that I could find from his first outdoor garden and decided that we would build new gardens that could live INSIDE!

The rest was a piece of cake! We made a trip to Walmart to grab a few supplies, including:

  • Trays to hold everything (we used a clay pot saucer from the garden department at Walmart, as well as a metal serving tray — both options were less than $7.00)
  • Small pieces of green felt from the craft section at Walmart (they were $0.23 each)
  • Inexpensive fake flowers and plants from the floral section at Walmart
  • Wire cutters to trim the stems on the artificial flowers
  • Modeling clay to stand up the flowers and plants vertically, making it look more like a forest or garden.
  • Rocks from Casey’s extensive “gem” collection that he has been storing under his bed for years. We could finally put some of them to good use!
  • Optional: if you want fairies, gnomes, and buildings for your garden, I would suggest looking at an arts and crafts store. I didn’t notice any at our Walmart. We got ours at Joann Fabrics and Crafts (plus additional figures from my mother-in-law), but I believe Michaels and other similar stores also carry them. Don’t want to go shopping? There are many cute options on Amazon, like this house, this bridge, and this lily pad pond.
  • We did NOT glue down any of our pieces, because I know my boys and I know that they like to move their items around and rearrange their “villages.” If you want your garden to be secure, I would suggest using a hot glue gun.

They had so much fun with this, and it only took about 20-30 minutes to put it all together!

Flowers lined the edges of our trays:

and stones covered any areas that the green felt didn’t reach!

We secured our little bushes and our taller flower “trees” with green modeling clay:

and the boys could simply place their accessories anywhere!

The vertical flowers towering over the houses give the gardens a whimsical, storybook-feel…

and best of all, there’s NO DIRT, NO WATERING, and NO MESS involved! The flowers won’t die, the accessories won’t blow away, and we can keep our gardens inside to enjoy for a long time to come!

  1. These are adorable! Thank you for sharing. These would be a great way to create something to bring the spring indoors for my nieces. This will be a fun activity to do on mother’s day with my sister and her kids.

  2. What a cute garden. I bet it was fun to put together. If you want to get slightly fancier, you could put fake grass on top of the felt. You could also glue down mirrors to simulate lakes and ponds. I’m going to give this a try!
