Even though the temperature is still pretty darn warm here in Virginia, we have now officially seen the first signs of fall in our neck of the woods! It’s harvest time…
Our property is almost completely surrounded by these beautiful rolling hills full of corn. Every year we spend the summer watching the stalks grow tall and playing in the rows.
Like the farmers, we patiently wait while the hot summer sun dries out the feed corn until it’s finally ready for harvest. And by late summer and early fall, we know that the tractors will really get to work!
Over the past few days, we’ve been watching what seems like a constant stream of John Deere tractors and trailers on parade, as they drive up and down the road outside of our fence. Even baby Spence has enjoyed sitting in the shade on the front porch swing and looking up bright-eyed when he hears the sound of another one rolling past.
These tractors are making constant trips back and forth between the corn fields and the silos, depositing the silage into the silos at the farm up the street.
You might remember a few months ago when we visited the dairy farm with our babysitters to check out the inner workings of the place. Since the boys loved that trip so much, Catherine and Rebekah suggested that we come back this morning to get an up close look while the local farmers filled their dad’s silos.
My older two boys threw on their John Deere caps and headed off to J.D. Heaven!
They obviously loved the tractors and trailers,
but my favorite was this little guy, who was hanging out in the shade of a nearby tree.
The farm really is a special, beautiful place and it’s experiences like this one that remind me of how blessed we are to live in Madison!
Have a great holiday weekend, friends!
