Chocolate Birthday Cake Protein Smoothies

It’s probably pretty obvious at this point that I love a thick, cold, and creamy breakfast, snack, or dessert option that also nourishes my body. While the occasional milkshake is a fun splurge, I try to save the ice cream for special indulgences. Instead, on a daily basis I treat myself to healthier, protein-packed sweet treats that satisfy my tastebuds and my nutritional needs!

These Chocolate Birthday Cake Protein Smoothies were inspired by my absolute favorite dessert — a yellow cake topped with a thick layer of the Spencer Family Recipe for Rich Chocolate Frosting that I was raised on. It’s a recipe that has been passed down through multiple generations and I’ve never tasted anything better! The secret ingredient in the chocolate frosting (which gives it that rich taste) is some brewed coffee! The frosting itself doesn’t taste like coffee, but that subtle touch brings out the indulgent chocolate flavor in a truly special way.

I figured that I could borrow the coffee and the cocoa powder from the frosting recipe, combine it with my favorite low-calorie, super-creamy Almond Breeze Almondmilk, toss in a few rainbow sprinkles, and I’d be sipping a cool and refreshing version of my favorite dessert…on a regular basis!

In less than 5 minutes you can enjoy this protein-packed treat. It’s a great way to satisfy your craving for a rich dessert in the evening, or an energizing way to start your day. This shake is so thick that I often pour it into a bowl so that I can eat it with a spoon — just like soft-serve ice cream! Top it with granola, whipped cream, fruit, almonds, more rainbow sprinkles…or all of the above!! I won’t judge you. After all, there’s no guilt involved in this frozen treat!
