Happy fall, friends! The older boys have been in morning preschool for about a week now, and we’re slowly getting back into our “normal” routine (whatever that means when you have three kids under the age of 5!). While “Back to School” season is an exciting time of year around here, it also happens to coincide with another exciting time of year in Virginia: APPLE SEASON!

Apple Buckle 2

Central Virginia’s climate is perfect for growing a large variety of apples, so we’re a little bit crazy over the fruit right now. That’s why I have (yet another) delicious recipe to share with you today, featuring some of our very own locally grown produce.

Are you familiar with buckle? It’s pie’s “rustic cousin,” and I must admit that until this month, I had never actually made a buckle of my own. Buckle is a member of the cobbler family, but coffee cake batter, rather than biscuit or pie dough, acts as the base. You mix it with fresh fruit, sprinkle it with a crumbly streusel topping, and bake until golden and oozy. Thanks to one of my new favorite sites, Yahoo! Food, I have finally been introduced to this scrumptious (and easy) treat!

If you don’t already know about Yahoo! Food, you’ve got to check it out. I found this buckle recipe on the site, as well as about a zillion other recipes that I can’t wait to try (Quick Coq au Vin or Roasted Chicken Tacos, anyone?!).

Yahoo! Food includes a variety of topics and different types of articles that cover anything and everything related to…you guessed it: FOOD. You can drool over photos, unique recipes, stories on the top food trends, the best cooking tools, new techniques, and everything you need to feel inspired in the kitchen.

They have brought together an all-star team of editors, including Managing Editor Sarah McColl; former Bon Appetit senior web editor, Julia Bainbridge; Rachel Tepper who joined from Huffington Post Food; and Alex Van Buren, who has written for Bon Appetit, Gourmet, and Martha Stewart Living. Yahoo! Food is even partnering with some of the best publishers in the business to bring you their expertise and ideas, including Bon Appetit, Epicurious, Food52, Martha Stewart and more. Basically it’s one-stop-shopping for all of you food lovers out there!

So after spending an embarrassingly long time scanning and reading through all of my options on Yahoo! Food, I decided that an apple buckle would be the perfect seasonal recipe to share with you today. After all, we did spend our Labor Day picking 30 pounds of apples at our neighbor’s farm…

These guys ate so many apples while they were supposed to be picking, that they ended up with serious tummy aches later on! There’s just nothing better than a crisp, juicy, early autumn apple straight off the tree!

I’ve been up to my eyeballs in apple butter, applesauce, and now…Apple Buckle! Let me tell you: this is one delicious treat! Whether you consider it a coffee cake (check out that streusel topping!) and enjoy it for breakfast, or a dessert and serve it at a fall gathering with family and friends, you cannot go wrong. The cake batter is moist and flavorful (thanks to all of that fruit!), and the crumb topping is to-die-for! You can find the full article and the link to the recipe from Rachel Tepper on Yahoo! Food here, and the direct link to the APPLE BUCKLE RECIPE IS HERE!
